Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Neighborhoods Planning Intern supports the work of the Parks Project Manager and the Mobility Planner. This position supports the planning of parks, outdoor recreation, facilities, and mobility projects. Assignments aim to advance projects and initiatives within these areas.

This position is an opportunity for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience relevant to academic studies.

Work commitment is anticipated to be 15-29 hours per week, with flexibility to accommodate academic schedules. This role is expected to last 3-6 months. __________________________________________________________________________________________

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  1. Assists in the research, analysis, and development of plans.
  • Develops master plans, site designs, and feasibility studies related to recreation and active transportation.
  • Supports community programs, initiatives, and projects.
  • Contributes to the design and construction of parks, trails, sidewalks, bike lanes, parking, signage and public spaces.
  1. Assists in information gathering and community outreach.
  • Collects and analyzes data related to demographics, transportation patterns, and recreation using various methods, including GIS software, surveys, site inventories, needs assessments, and field observations.
  • Participates in public meetings, workshops, and other outreach activities to gather community input and feedback on planning projects.
  1. Prepares reports and analysis.
  • Assists in the preparation of technical reports, maps, graphics, and studies.
  • Develops recommendations and conceptual designs based on research findings.
  • Prepares presentation materials to effectively communicate conclusions.
  • Works with internal teams and external shareholders.
  1. Contributes to plan-making and project management.
  • Contributes to the creation of final plans, documents, and reports in preparation for project adoption and implementation.
  • Provides administrative and logistical support to project teams, including scheduling meetings, taking notes, tracking deadlines, and organizing project materials.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • Current enrollment in or recent graduation from a college or university program in geography, urban planning, transportation planning, urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, or a closely related field is strongly preferred. Equivalent combinations of related education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience (paid or volunteer) in a government or community-focused role is preferred.
  • Volunteer and community involvement experience is preferred.
  • Possession of a valid state driver's license or the ability to obtain one prior to employment is preferred.

  • Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with colleagues and partners.
  • Skill in decision-making using independent judgment and analyzing situations to make appropriate decisions.
  • Effective time management skills to efficiently complete tasks.
  • Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, design software, GIS applications, office equipment usage, and the use of computers, mobile electronic devices, and other relevant industry software.
  • Ability to work independently, often alone or while interacting with community members.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
